B i o g r a p h y

Giuseppe FRIGENI is a stage director, choreographer, set & light designer.

Since 1999 he is directing and designing set & lights for many productions:

Verdi's MACBETH, Wagner's LOHENGRIN, Beethoven's FIDELIO Wagner' s TRISTAN und ISEULT (Opéra National de Bordeaux), Landowski’s LE FOU (Théâtre de Châtelet/Mogador), Weill's DER JASAGER (Corum Opéra Montpellier), DePutte's WET SNOW (Holland Festival) and  I'M HER MOUTH (Muziekgebouw, Amsterdam), Puccini's TURANDOT (Teatro Comunale Modena & Ferrara; Auditorium Tenerife; 2016 Opera Lombardia), Handel's PARTENOPE (Teatro Comunale Modena & Ferrara), Verdi's TRAVIATA (Stadttheater St. Gallen), Messiaen's SAINT FRANÇOIS d'ASSISE, with set by Kabakov (Ruhr Triennale; Teatro Real, Madrid), Dusapin's PASSION (Festival Aix-en-Provence, Cité de la Musique Paris,...), Clement's AN ENLIGHTENED DISCIPLE OF DARKNESS (Festival Nargen, Tallinn), ...

 

For many years he also worked as collaborator/co-director with Robert Wilson on several opera, theater and artistic events : "THE NIGHT BEFORE THE DAY "(Opening Night Opera Bastille)" ,"Le MARTYRE de SAINT SEBASTIAN" ,'"FOUR SAINTS IN 3 ACTS" , "T.S.E", "Luigi Nono's PROMETEO", "BLAUBART", "ERWARTUNG", "DON JUAN, el ULTIMO" , "DONNA DEL MARE/LADY FROM THE SEA"  "ALICE IM BETT"  "SNOW ON THE MESA", "MONSTERS OF GRACE" (3D film in collaboration with Philip Glass ), "OEDIPUS REX", ALCESTE", "ORFEO & EURYDICE",  "The RING"  "Die ZAUBERFLÖTE", "Mme BUTTERFLY", "PELLETS & MELISANDE", "FRAU OHNE SCHATTEN”,...and the Monteverdi’s Trilogy : ORFEO, IL RITORNO d'ULISSE, L'INCORONAZIONE di POPPEA,....

As choreographer he worked with Patrice Chéreau on "DON GIOVANNI" and "WOZZECK", with Peter Stein on "WOZZECK" and "LIBUSSA", with Luca Ronconi on "DON GIOVANNI" and with Klaus M.Grüber on  "LA TRAVIATA", "TRISTAN und ISEULT", "OTELLO" and "BORIS GUDONOV".

He also created lights for dance productions by Dominque Dupuy, Elisabeth Schwartz & Donata D'Urso.

Recently he was proposed to write and direct a documentary about Marco Bellocchio, the famous italian film-maker.
